Plans to preserve and revitalise Al Saidiya School, one of Oman’s most prominent educational landmarks, are gaining momentum following discussions on a comprehensive development project aimed at transforming the historic institution into a centre for education, culture and community engagement.

The proposed initiative was reviewed during a meeting between Abdulhamid bin Abdulrahman al Kharousi, Deputy Wali of Muttrah, and the school’s administration.

Discussions focused on future development plans that would preserve the school’s historical identity while expanding its educational, cultural and social contributions in line with the Sultanate’s wider urban and cultural development goals.

Officials examined a range of proposals intended to reposition Al Saidiya School as a sustainable educational and cultural destination.

At the heart of the vision is the establishment of a model institution capable of attracting talented students and educators while offering a modern learning environment grounded in academic excellence.

The initiative seeks to balance innovation with preservation, ensuring the school’s architectural and historical character remains intact.

Among the proposals discussed was the establishment of a museum documenting the history of education in Oman. The museum would showcase the evolution of the country’s educational system and highlight milestones that have shaped learning and knowledge development across generations. It is also expected to serve as a repository for educational archives, historical records and memorabilia, preserving an important chapter of Oman’s national heritage.

Plans for a community learning centre were also reviewed, with the facility expected to provide educational and training programmes for different age groups. The centre would further strengthen the school’s role as a community hub by promoting lifelong learning, professional development and skills enhancement while encouraging broader public participation in educational activities.

Officials highlighted the strategic significance of the school’s location overlooking Muttrah’s waterfront, noting its strong potential to emerge as a cultural and tourism destination. By integrating education, heritage and cultural experiences under one framework, the project aims to create a unique attraction for residents, students, researchers and visitors alike.

Participants underscored the historical importance of Al Saidiya School as a pioneering institution that played a key role in Oman’s educational journey.

Over the decades, the school has contributed to shaping generations of Omanis who later served the nation across diverse sectors. Preserving this legacy, they noted, remains essential to maintaining a meaningful link between Oman’s educational past and future aspirations.

The meeting concluded with calls for stronger cooperation among government institutions, educational bodies and community stakeholders to support the successful implementation of the proposed vision.

Once realised, the project is expected to reinforce Al Saidiya School’s standing as a landmark of knowledge, heritage and community engagement, enriching Muttrah’s cultural landscape while inspiring future generations through the preservation of Oman’s educational legacy.
